This is Milicent.
Milicent Kagonga 29, is a Cervical Cancer survivor and one of our beneficiaries at Donate A Wig. She comes from Kariobangi North one of the most deprived areas in Kenya. In 2018 Milicent attended one of our Feel Good Makeover Sessions and later a Vision Board Workshop. Milicent shared that there were no Cancer support groups in the underprivileged areas of Nairobi.

We were able to help her put a plan together through one of our workshops to set up a support group in her local area. We are excited to share that Milicent went ahead and founded Symbol of Hope Warriors (SOHW) a registered charity whose mission is to reduce cancer-related stigma. The charity to date has almost 80 members. Not only were we able to give Milicent a physical makeover but we were also able to offer her the tools she needed to pursue her passion.

Milicent has been one of the inspirations behind Donate A Wig and continues to be part of the DAW family. SOHW currently works closely with DAW to help make our services accessible to more women who may otherwise not have reached out for support.

Feel Good Makeover July 2019 https://www.donateawig.org/lorem-ipsum-dolor-sit-amet/ Tue, 24 Mar 2020 14:52:00 +0000 https://wpjelly.com/shell/?p=212

We had various local businesses, as well as international businesses and organisations, come together to help us pull off a successful makeover for 55 women.

The day started with a time of prayer and singing. Despite the challenges each woman was facing, for that moment they seemed to be able to put that on the side and unite in gratitude at the opportunity to come together. That was followed by a time of networking as light refreshments were shared and the makeovers began. The staff of TJ Hair Clinic went above and beyond what we expected. Not only did they do the makeup and wig fitting but they provided manicure and massage as well.

The atmosphere had an amazing buzz as music played and we all danced and sung. There was laughter, tears and lots of hugs. Through tears of joy and tears of pain, in all the power of lipstick stood tall and did not let us down. Although we had seen many reactions before, each reaction to the transformations still go us excited. The weight that some of the women carry as they walked in through the door was immediately lifted as we put the mirror in front of them. For those few hours, they were able to breathe and not think about their day to day struggles.

The day is never quite finished without some great food. Inner Kenya Events provided a beautiful meal to crown the day. We are grateful to Light Stand Church in Umoja for allowing us to use their premises to host the women and to everyone who worked tirelessly to make sure that each lady left with a smile.
We look forward to the next chapter.
